Bereavement leave

Tell me about your bereavement leave policies. How much and what kind (paid or unpaid) of time off are employers supposed to give to team members who have lost a loved one?

Anecdotally, I know two days is normal. Do you have restrictions based on the employee’s relationship to the deceased? This seems like sticky territory and I want to make sure that our policy respects employees’ need to grieve but also doesn’t leave too much room for people to take advantage.

Does your state have bereavement leave laws to take into account?
